Gibson Certified Vintage 1965 Gibson ES-335TD, Sunburst
1965 Gibson ES-335TD, Serial Number 360624
This 1965 Gibson ES-335TD spent its entire life in West Michigan just a short distance from where it was crafted. It’s an incredibly clean example of our semi-hollow thinline electric from one of our most transitional years. Shipped from Kalamazoo on November 18, 1965, this guitar comes in its equally clean original Lifton case with some fun case candy to top it all off.
This ES-335 features a warm iced-tea sunburst finish with subtle figure across the top and light, even checking throughout. The most notable wear on the guitar consists of two small dings through the finish on the back of the body.
In 1965 we see a range of spec changes—including nut width, plating material, and other component shifts—and this ES-335 lands squarely in the middle of these transitional features: a mix of nickel and chrome hardware (nickel ABR-1 bridge and pickguard bracket paired with chrome pickup covers and trapeze tailpiece), as well as gold-insert tone knobs and silver-insert volume knobs.
The neck profile is a very comfortable full medium C with a beautiful, dark Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. The original frets are in excellent condition, and the guitar plays cleanly up and down the neck. Both original Patent No. humbuckers remain untouched, reading 7.40k in the neck and 7.41k in the bridge, and deliver a balanced, articulate, open tone. All solder is original, and the wiring harness features CTS potentiometers and Sprague “Black Beauty” capacitors.
The original ABR-1 bridge (included in the case), which had begun to collapse slightly, has been replaced with a Gibson Custom Shop wired ABR-1 aged to match. The original bone nut had previously been re-slotted for the B and low E strings for proper spacing and remains fully functional. The original short 5-ply black pickguard has curled quite a bit—as is common with vintage celluloid guards—but remains stable and does not interfere with playing.
The original black-and-goldenrod Lifton hardshell case is equally clean, complete with the guitar’s original inspection slip, ABR-1 adjustment instructions, and humbucking pickup instructions.
An exceptional, all-original ES-335 from the tail end of the wide-nut era—a phenomenal collector-grade piece that’s also a superb player.
This guitar has received a professional setup and thorough inspection from Gibson Certified Vintage and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, Letter of Appraisal, and new Limited Lifetime Warranty.
