Gibson Custom 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue with Figured Top, Light Aged, Lemon Burst
A Burst-spec 1961 Les Paul SG Standard
This Gibson Custom Select 1961 Les Paul™ SG™ Standard Reissue features the aesthetic and construction appointments of a 1959 Les Paul Standard. Complete with a figured maple top, cream plastics, and a Lemon Burst finish, this guitar combines two of Gibson’s most treasured instruments. Gibson Custom Select offers customized guitars featuring unique pickups, handpicked finishes, and other details from top to bottom. These guitars are designed by Gibson’s experts, showcasing what is possible through Gibson Custom Select as well as Made to Measure.
Starting in 1961, the Les Paul Standard model shifted from the iconic single-cutaway design with a mahogany body and a maple top to what is now known as the SG. The model still had Les Paul’s name on the headstock, so models from 1961 still technically had the Les Paul moniker. Removing the maple top makes the guitar lighter in weight and gives it different sonic attributes. The core layout remains the same from the Les Paul to the SG with a pair of humbucker™ pickups, a Stop Bar tailpiece, an ABR-1 bridge, and the same control layout. A bound mahogany neck with a rosewood fretboard with trapezoid inlays is glued to a solid mahogany body using a long neck tenon. The neck has an Authentic 1961 profile, which is based on a vintage 1961 neck profile typical of the era. This is the thinnest neck profile offered on Gibson Custom’s historic reissues. The headstock features double-ring, single-line Kluson® tuning machines, along with the Gibson logo and crown inlaid in mother-of-pearl.
Customized features on this 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue start with the figured maple top. This maple top is glued to a mahogany body, like a 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue. Because of the body carvings of the SG, no body binding appears on this guitar. The top is in Lemon Burst while the back and neck are in Cherry. This combination is commonly seen on vintage and reissue Les Paul Standard guitars from 1958 and 1959. Cream pickup rings, neck tenon cover, and switch washer replace the standard black plastics. The entire guitar was sent through the Murphy Lab and given the Light Aging treatment, which gives the guitar a storied look and extra rolled fretboard edges.
This Gibson Custom Select 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue mashes up two of Gibson’s most iconic models into one. These guitars are made in small batches, so it is rare to see them out in the wild. Included with the guitar is a reissue hardshell case and a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity.
