Gibson Custom 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue with P-90s, VOS, Double Gold
1961 SG in the Style of a 1956 Les Paul
This Gibson Custom Select 1961 SG™ Les Paul™ Standard Reissue is a mashup of a 1961 Les Paul SG Standard with a 1956 Les Paul Standard. Gibson Custom Select offers unique guitars with special features that can include custom finishes, handpicked electronics, and other special details. These guitars are designed by some of Gibson’s experts and are made in small batches by the skilled artisans at Gibson Custom in both Bozeman, Montana, and Nashville, Tennessee. This 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue features a few features most commonly found on a 1956 Les Paul, including Soapbar P-90 pickups and an All Double Gold finish.
1961 marked the first year without the single-cutaway Les Paul shape that debuted in 1952 and ran through 1960. Throughout these years, the Les Paul had shifted and evolved, at times drastically, and at other times slightly. From 1954 to 1956, the Les Paul’s bridge and tailpiece evolved from a wraparound to a Stop Bar and ABR-1 setup. This helped with intonation and gave the guitar a larger break angle on the strings for increased sustain. By 1961, the single-cutaway Les Paul was discontinued in favor of the SG shape. The body changed from a single-cutaway mahogany body with a maple cap to a solid mahogany body with a double cutaway. This guitar mashes up timelines and features, creating a 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue with the electronics and color scheme of a 1956 Les Paul Standard Reissue.
This Gibson Custom Select has some of the standard features of a 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue, including an Authentic 1961 neck profile, which is much thinner than the neck profile that comes on the 1956 Les Paul Standard Reissue. A double cutaway solid mahogany body joins a solid mahogany neck with a bound rosewood fretboard and trapezoid inlays. On the headstock is an inlaid Gibson block logo with a crown inlay and Kluson® double ring, single-line tuners with Keystone buttons. Black plastics were chosen to match the color scheme of a normal 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue, which includes a black pickguard, black Top Hat with silver insert control knobs, and a black switch washer with a cream toggle switch tip.
This 1961 Les Paul SG Standard Reissue combines the sonic features of a 1956 Les Paul Standard Reissue with the playing experience from a 1961 Les Paul SG. The SG shape is not commonly seen with an All Double Gold finish, which makes this entire combination of specifications fit the bill for an alternative historical timeline of Gibson’s Golden Era. Included with the guitar is a reissue hardshell case and Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity.
